Title: Sable - An Unforgettable Journey of Self-Discovery

Sable, released in September 2021, is an open-world exploration video game that invites players on a fascinating journey of self-discovery. Developed by the two-person indie team, Shedworks, and published by Raw Fury, Sable is available on Microsoft Windows, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and as of November 2022, PlayStation 5.

The game's protagonist is Sable, a girl who embarks on a unique quest to find a mask, symbolic of her identity in her nomadic clan. This quest leads her through the enigmatic desert planet of Midden, packed with ancient ruins and intriguing characters. Gameplay involves solving puzzles, platforming challenges, and interacting with non-playable characters (NPCs), as Sable finds her place in this beautifully crafted world.

Sable's gameplay is all about exploration and discovery, free from combat and linear storylines. The game employs environmental cues and NPC dialogues to unravel its narrative, offering players the freedom to traverse expansive sand dunes and long-forgotten ruins. Stamina-based mechanics such as running, climbing, and mid-air gliding, add an exhilarating edge to exploration.

Customization forms a key part of Sable's experience. Players can modify Sable's hoverbike and wardrobe, the latter including the story-driven masks. These customization options can be earned through exploration or by completing quests, often revolving around collecting mundane items like bugs or fruit.

Daniel Fineberg and Gregorios Kythreotis, the creative minds behind Shedworks, began developing Sable in 2017. They drew inspiration from Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the art of Jean Giraud (Mœbius), and the Legend of Zelda's Breath of the Wild. The game's stunning hand-crafted environments are complemented by an atmospheric soundtrack provided by American indie rock band, Japanese Breakfast.

Lead singer and songwriter of Japanese Breakfast, Michelle Zauner, composed the game's soundtrack using the game's concept art and written descriptions as inspiration. The result is a diverse blend of ambient pop tunes and new-age instrumentals that wonderfully echo the game's moods and landscapes. Notably, the game's soundtrack is mainly location-based, with different tracks signaling the in-game day-night cycle. Zauner's favorite piece, "Better the Mask," is a standout track inspired by 1970s singer-songwriter music.

From its debut at E3 2018 to its successful release in 2021, Sable's enchanting world and intriguing narrative make it a must-play for all video game enthusiasts.
